City dwellers are frustrated by digging and dust pollution in the capital Dhaka. Most of Dhaka’s roads are broken, people are frustrated by endless misery due to lack of coordination in work.
Experts do not see the solution to the existing problems until the authority of the service companies comes under one umbrella.
It has been seen on the spot that digging is continued on the road from Mirpur 12 to Motijheel due to the development work of Metro Rail.
And for the construction work of flyover in Kalshi area, deadly dust has been created for a long time. On the other hand, public life has become unbearable due to air pollution caused by dust and sand.
The same picture has been seen while drainage repair work is going on from Mirpur-11 Bahasani Junction to Lalmatia Road, Mirpur-12 Road and Mirpur Mohammadia Road. Besides, Bihari Palli Road is closed for repair work for a long time.
Excavation is going on in the name of installing WASA pipeline on 3, 10, 11, 13 road of Uttara.
The road in front of Mitford Hospital is also in a dilapidated condition. Development work has been stopped for a long time. In this situation, the people’s life is being disrupted due to the dust movement as well as the suffering of the people in the area.
According to an investigation, Kuril Pragati Sarani road is also dilapidated. Development work is going on by digging deep holes. Soil, sand, bricks are being laid on the side of the road. The dust in the air is mixing and disrupting public life. Effective measures are not being taken to prevent these.
Due to development work, Mirpur, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Farmgate, Karwan Bazar, Bangla Motor, Shahbag, Press Club, Paltan, Motijheel areas are dusty. Due to the dust on these roads, it has become difficult to move.
Although water is sprinkled by DSCC on dust pollution, it is not playing an effective role. Because after 30-35 minutes it goes back to the previous state.
It is also known that excavations are going on in different areas of Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Mirpur, Uttara, Badda and Old Dhaka.
According to some victims, BRT construction work is underway on the road from Tongi to the Airport. With the onset of the dry season, dust pollution has increased dramatically.
Occasionally the amount of dust reaches such a level that the drivers cannot see the front two to five hands from behind the car. This almost inadvertently causes one car to collide with another.
Although the situation is clear to those in charge, those concerned are not active in overcoming the situation.
It is learned that, the total number of roads in the two city corporations of Dhaka is about 3400 km. Of these, about 1020 km of roads are broken. This situation has arisen due to the development work of Dhaka North and South City Corporation, Dhaka WASA, Titas Gas, DPDC, DESCO, Metrorail, Elevated Expressway, BRT.
In this regard, Abu Naser Khan, Chairman of Poribesh Bachao Abdolon (POBA) told that, “Dust pollution is being caused due to development work, dumping of garbage on roads, burning of plastic and polythene. Due to these pollutants, people are suffering from various diseases including cold, cough and shortness of breath. These issues are not unknown to the responsible agencies. Even then, they continue to show extreme negligence in performing their duties.”
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam said, “A lot of dust is spreading in the air due to development work. According to the rules, those who will do development work have the responsibility to control dust by sprinkling water. But in many cases they are not doing that. A letter has been sent from us. We will be tougher to stop dust pollution and unplanned digging.”
