Intense traffic jams in Dhaka city

Amdadul Haque:

Severe traffic jams have been seen in the capital for some now a days. Hours of intense traffic jams, the suffering of the road users is increasing.

Visiting around the city, this reporter found severe traffic congestion in Dhanmondi, Shahbag, Paltan, Science Lab, Bangla Motor, Kakrail, Karwan Bazar, Mouchak, Motijheel, Jatrabari and other major roads of the capital since Monday morning.

However, analysts said that the public transport system in the capital has not yet been developed in the true sense. Bus companies compete to get passengers. They block the road and compete to get passengers.

It is learned that, a city has to have at least 25 per cent of its roads. However, Dhaka city have only 7 to 8 per cent of the roads. Although there are 3 to 4 per cent of roads for traffic. Even after that, buses are being parked on the road and passengers are being picked up and dropped off.

Although all this is being happened in front of the eyes of the traffic police. Apart from this, traffic congestion and suffering is also increasing due to car parking in here and there of the capital.

On the other hand, due to the unresponsiveness of the highway police, vehicles are stuck in traffic for hours at the entrance to Dhaka. Especially on holidays, around Dhaka, Savar, Tongi, Ashulia, Kanchpur, Shimrail, Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Sylhet highways are causing terrible traffic jams.

On Monday noon, visiting Karwan Bazar traffic circle, it was seen that the vehicles were stopped in the traffic jam. Many were getting out from buses and cars and walking to their respective destinations.

A member of the on-duty traffic police was standing in the circle. Another policeman was sitting inside the box. Not only Karwan Bazar, but also Shahbagh, Matshya Bhaban, Banglamotor, Panthapath, Farmgate, Agargaon, Paltan More, Motijheel, Gulistan, Mohakhali and Banani areas. These areas have been visited and there were traffic jams on both sides of the road.

Even in this situation, pedestrians were crossing the road as the gap of the moving vehicle. There was a risk of an accident at any moment, but no one was concerned.

The rickshaw pullers were also taking advantage of the situation as there was no eye catching activity of the traffic police. Pedestrians claimed that vehicles on both sides of the road sometimes come to a standstill for hours in those areas.

Saddam Hossain, a pedestrian in Karwan Bazar said that there is no foot over bridge at Karwaran Bazar intersection. That’s why people cross the road on foot at risk. He said since there is no foot over bridge, it is the responsibility of the traffic police to stop the vehicles and allow people to cross the road. But they also do not perform their duties properly. He has to cross the road at risk. Traffic jams are also being created.

A traffic policeman, who did not want to be named, said he has to take a break from time to time in addition to performing his duties. Besides, many do not perform their duties properly for fear of coronavirus. Besides, some traffic police sit in the police box showing various excuses instead of performing their duties.

There are allegations that many traffic police are more interested in earning money in a dishonest way than in performing their duties due to lack of proper evaluation and lack of facilities in the workplace.

Besides, despite the severe traffic jam at various traffic signals, the sergeant is often busy checking the documents of the vehicle without noticing traffic jam. There are allegations that some sergeants try to make money in the name of stopping cars and checking documents unnecessarily. This increases the intensity of traffic jams also.

Moreover, traffic congestion in the capital is caused by illegal parking on the road, occupation of sidewalks, temporary wholesale raw market on the side of the road, non-development of automatic traffic signal system, non-compliance with lanes, tendency to disobey traffic laws, negligence of traffic police, traffic laws ignorance and so on.

Iftekharul islam, ADC of Media and Public Relations Department of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police told that, “Due to the digging of some development works like Metrorail, gas line and WASA, the road has become narrow and some traffic jam is being created. However, the jam is now much less than before.”

In response to a question, he added that the traffic police are working relentlessly to reduce traffic congestion. For the convenience of the citizens, the traffic department is always trying to reduce the traffic congestion.
